Creative Ways to Use Your Extra Charms

Charms don't only have to be used in necklaces, bracelets, and earrings- they can be used for so much more!  They are so versatile that you can use them in any craft or project you can think up!  Here are a few examples of ways you can re-purpose your old jewelry, or other charms you may have hanging around the house if you don't want to throw them away or sell them:

Gift Tags
(nautical theme - these are so cute!  use a shape paper punch (or cut with scissors) to cut our your tags, then using a pair of wire cutters, snip off the top hole where the jump ring connects, if desired.  make sure to file down any parts that are sharp, then simply attach each charm to your tags with a glue gun or another similar glue.  you can also glue them to scrapbook pages!)

 Handmade Note Cards
(tree on aqua blue scrapbook paper)

Gift Packaging
(embellish small or large presents with your charms!)

Candy Jar Embellishments
(add charms to candy jars, plates, bowls, silverware, or any other ceramic
dish you can think of to add a little 'charm' to your style!)

Shoe Charms
(attach a charm to your shoe for a little added bling, interest and design)

Hand Stamped Necklace Tutorial

Why is hand stamped jewelry expensive to buy?  Take a look at the image below and the supplies needed to make these popular stamped disks!  We decided to add them into our shop this year before the holidays, since they are a popular Christmas gift idea :)   If you want to make something for yourself, you will not likely need everything shown in this photo, but you'll need a lot of the tools.  If you're wanting to make & sell this jewelry, then I would suggest purchasing everything here so you can offer a lot of different options.

Simple Hand Stamped Initial Necklace

- 3-4" steel bench block
- 3-4" rubber block
- brass hammer/mallet (2 lbs)
- household hammer, or nylon hammer (or both!)
- steel letter & number stamping set
- extra fine sharpie, black
- 0000 steel wool
- jewelry pliers
- metal hole punch pliers (1.25mm)  - (optional- you can purchase stamping disks with or without connecting holes for jump rings)
- stamping discs (20-22 gauge, 8-12mm round)
- chain (I used 1mm brass cable chain)
- lobster clasp (optional if you have a pre-made chain)
- jump rings
- head pins (optional)
- crystal or gemstone bead of your choice (optional)

1. Choose Your Letter Stamp
I took this picture to show you just a couple different options.  You can choose uppercase, lowercase, tiny & larger sized letters.  There are many different stamp sets you can purchase with different fonts, including cursive!

2. Create Hole for Jump Ring
Using your metal hole punch pliers, create a small hole for your jump ring near to the top of the disk.
(It will look like this)

3.  Center Your Letter Initial
Place your disk on top of the bench block where you will be hammering.  It can be difficult to center your letter initial perfectly, and you'll most likely need a couple disks to practice on :)  A little trick that's helpful if you have a shiny surface is to use your disk as a mirror so you can see where you are placing your letter.

4. Stamp Your Disk
Once you have your steel initial stamp centered, place your brass hammer lightly on top of it, and then with one swing, hammer down hard (depending on the hardness of the metal) to create the indent into your disk.  If you hammer more then once, you'll risk having multiple indentations of the letter initial that may not be in the exact spot - however, it may work if you hold the initial hard against the metal while hammering.  If it so happens that your letter was not squared up with the metal, and the indentation is deeper in some areas, you can try to match up the stamping initial with the first by feeling where the grooves are with your stamp, and hammering down again to fix the problem.  It may or may not work as you wish!

5. Flatten Your Disk
After stamping your initial, your disk will likely warp from the impact.  Turn your disk over and use your household or nylon hammer to flatten the disk back how it was.

6. Darken Letter Initial
Using an extra fine black Sharpie, color deep into the initial grooves (you may need to cover the entire initial to make this happen).  After doing so, use a small piece of steel wool to rub off the black marker until only the letter initial is left darkened.
(another example)

7.  Attaching to the Chain
After finishing your chain (using jewelry pliers, jump rings and a clasp, unless you purchased a pre-made chain), attach a jump ring to your letter initial and place onto the chain.  You can use a headpin and a bead of your choice to add a pop of color to your necklace.

The Universe

Universe themed products are the new fashion trend!  Our full moon and nebula jewelry have been most popular lately following this trend.  It got me to wondering why the universe is so appealing?  I think first off, it's just simply beautiful.  People like lights, sparkles, and well, 'bling'- which is what the stars together look like.  The night sky can become hard to ignore once you take a moment out of your busy life to really stop and look at what you see up there, and you start wondering.  You wonder at the things you are looking at, and the endless possibilities of what could be up there; the planets, how the solar system works, the constellations, endless galaxies, the pure perfection of how it all works together, the idea of other existing worlds and life.  Although we know so much more about it today then we ever have, there are still an incredible amount of mysteries that haven't yet been unfolded or discovered.  It can also change, even just a bit, the way you might see your yourself, your life, and your personal existence.  It may motivate you to look around at the lives of others, and wonder about who we all are and why we're here.

From a more religious standpoint, Elder Neal A. Maxwell, an LDS church apostle, once said:  "This mortal experience through which we are passing is one in which beauties abound; subtleties and delicacies are all about us, waiting to be noticed. Wonders are everywhere to be seen. It is, however, the observing meek who will contemplate the lilies of the field, will ponder the galaxies and see God moving in His majesty, will notice, and then lift up, those whose hands hang down."  Meekness- A Dimension of True Discipleship, March 1983

Here is a universe themed treasury list I recently put together in our Etsy shop of some beautiful handmade products!

If you haven't taken the time to explore or ponder the universe, go look and learn-- you will be amazed!

DIY Basic Dangle Earrings Tutorial

Wanna try making your own earrings, but are not sure where to start?  Here is a simple tutorial to help you know the materials you'll need to start creating your own designs!  It's also a great and fun way to spend time with family and friends for holidays and other get togethers!

-2 headpins (25mm - 30mm long)
-4 jump rings (4mm or 6mm)
-4 colored beads (4mm - 8mm)
-2 brass disks, pendant, or charm of your choice
-2 bronze or silver earring hooks

(You can pick all of these items up at your local craft store (Michaels, Hobby Lobby & Joanne's Fabric all have great beads and jewelry findings) or order supplies online at Etsy, Ebay and other sites).

Start by threading the headpin with your beads, you'll need to create a loop on each end of the headpin using pliers.  You'll need at least 8mm of wire on each end to create your loops.

You might need to adjust the loops so they're centered on the beads using pliers, (so it doesn't hang lopsided).

Then you connect the disk, pendant, or charm to the completed beaded headpin with a jump ring.

Then connect the completed headpin to your earring hook on the other end with a jump ring.

And you're done!  Simple as that  :)

Ender's Game Blurb

Okay, so we are a pretty big Ender's Game fans... and admit, are chewing at the bit waiting for the movie to come out this coming November!  In fact, we've been waiting for almost 10 years now, since they've been talking about making it a motion picture since then.  If you haven't read it, now is the time!  Check out the storyline on wikipedia, and then go rent/buy the book before the movie is here!

Leading roles in this movie include:  Asa Butterfield, Harrison Ford, Ben Kingsley, Aramis Knight, Hailee Steinfeld, Jimmy Pinchak, Viola Davis, and Abigail Breslin.

Awesome picks for the movie, don't you think?  If you are already a fan, check out our new Ender's Game themed jewelry here.  These make great gifts!
